All Evidence to the Contrary, I am Normal

Weekly weigh-in: 204.8
Loss: -1.5
Total loss: 86.7 lbs.
Emotion: Uncommonly Normal

Talk about your punch in the gut: it’s a day or so after Christmas last year and I’m standing there on our brand spankin’ new Wii Fit board, getting my first weigh-in for my cute lil’ Mii character (he looks just like me, by the way). Anyway, the scale spins and suddenly the TV chirps out in an elf voice: “Oh, that’s obese.”

Worse than that, my lil’ Mii character has just plumped out noticeably, sending my 10-year-old daughter Pisa bursting into hysterical laughter.

Check that: now my not-so-lil’ Mii character looks just like me. *sigh*

Well, that was then and this is now, and now definitely ain’t then.

See, I just stepped on the Wii Fit board this morning and made some magic happen.

It seems I am NORMAL.

Not Morbidly Obese, not Obese, not Overweight… just a regular ol’ plain-as-can-be Normal guy (okay, we both know that I’m not “normal” normal, but, well, you know what I mean...).

This journey is about taking a step in the right direction… and then following it up with another step and another and another. It doesn’t happen overnight… but the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll arrive. And I’m here to tell you that arriving… crossing that razor-thin line between Obese and Overweight, between Overweight and Normal... well, it feels mighty fine.

My lil’ Mii character jumped for joy.

So did I.

Egged on by the success of my lil’ Mii partner, I dragged the last two too-tight pairs of pants out of my top closet shelf and tried ‘em on.

Done and done.

I no longer own a pair of pants that don’t fit. Check that: I own lots and lots of too-big trousers, but none that are too small to wear anymore.

Thus ends my game of “Last Pants Standing.” Who was the winner? I was, of course.

I’m sitting here writing this, wearing pants that I had basically given up on this time last year, reminiscing about that sinking feeling I got when my Wii Fit called me “obese". I’m not that person anymore, and it occurs to me that a name change might be in order.

Jack Sh*t, Gettin’ Fit?

Uh uh.

Jack Sh*t Done Got Fit.

Hmmmm, still needs work.

Then again, so do I.

  9. Oh I wanted to punch the screen when my stupid little Mii swelled to twice her size and I heard that stupid little chirpy elf voice. Congrats on reaching normalcy (in one regard at least)!

  10. Oh I can relate! I rushed hone with my new Wii Fit and it called me obese too! BASTARD! Last time I check I was overweight....maybe I should try it again soon. :) Did your Mii visit the salon for a dye job? Looks like the hair and beard got a little touching up! lol

  11. congrats!

I've been thinking about picking up a wii, and am not thinking about it harder. Seems like there's a lot to be said about some of the wii fitness software available.

  13. Way to go, Jack! I should give the Wii Fit another try. I should be just overweight, not obese anymore!

  14. Okay, while I certainly might challenge use of the word NORMAL, I am wholeheartedly happy for you at winning the game of the pants. Congrats.

  15. Congrats! I hate it when my Fit calls me obese. And then my mii gets huge. Glad you conquered that!

  16. Get rid of those big pants NOW! You'll feel even better and you're never going to need them again anyway :-)

  18. How about just Jack Sh*t Fit!!! Way to go on being in the normal catagory. I must say though that I think the wii fit tends to be on the really low side for weight so I bet you've been in the "real" normal range for awhile now. Way to go on not having any pants standing anymore too.

  19. YAY for Jack!! So happy for you friend! You deserve evryhing that is good and wonderful!

  20. What a wonderful post!!!!!!!!!!! NO, you are not normal but just plain ole fun and yes, to the pint about losing weight!! Even when you are funny, there is a point! Loved this: It doesn’t happen overnight… but the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll arrive.

How exciting that you are in those pants now!!!! Wait, whose pants are you in??? :-)

    HUGE CONGRATS!!!!

PS: Does the Wii really call people obese & make their character look fat? I don't own one.

  21. I know how good it feels to fit into something that was too tight previously!

My congratulations! My first visit to you.

  22. WOOHOO! Awesome.

I think things like WiiFit (though I haven't ever tried it) are a good way for us to get some perspective on how we *actually* look. Sometimes we get so used to seeing our bodies that we "forget" what size we are- and it can be a good wakeup call to see ourselves in "mii" form.

  23. did my wii assessment last week
had never been on one before
    it was hilariouslyugly.
    and mildly odd.

  25. Woo-hoo! Congrats on the pants fitting and being in the "normal" weight category!

Hmmm, I thought I wanted a Wii, but now I dunno...I don't think I need a machine calling me fat, lol. On the other hand, maybe I better get one quick so I can start at obese and get down to overweight pretty soon!

  26. wowzers!!! be proud of normalcy!! It's actually not that bad :-) You're out of obese city!

  27. That's great, Jack. I still remember when you first started blogging. Doesn't seem all that long ago. If only I had made the progress you have!

I am so greatful for the successful weightloss bloggers out there as it gives me hope that I can do it too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's a great story Jack. Maybe I will be able to tell the same one.
When we got our wii I had that same little fat mii saying hurtful words.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Congratulations on being normal! Your dog should be getting scared.

    ReplyDelete

  34. Congrats! I can't wait to be "normal!" I'm about 10 lbs away.

The first time I used the Wii Fit, I couldn't believe how rude it was, lol!

  39. To be judged by the Wii gods, and pass muster. Wow! Soon, you'll need new pants. But I hope not. Because, like, I don't want to see the next goal come to fruition. *poor doggie*

  41. WOW! That is great! Congrats on getting into those pants! I have a closet full of clothes that I can't wear, but I'm looking forward to the day when the only things in there that I don't wear are the things that are too big! Keep up the good work!

  42. Freakin' awesome. My Wii Fit is still an asshole to me, but then again, I'm not fit yet either. ;)

  43. Congratulations, Jack. Truly and heartful, from me to you, congratulations. Be proud, man. You did it.

  44. Congratulations! That is fabulous...

  45. Congratulations on being 'normal'! I recently went from morbidly obese to *just* obese(!) and I need to get down to 184lbs to be withing the 'normal' range for my height. My actual goal is a little higher than that, though, but I may revise it once I get there!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fantastic. But you will never be just normal - you are remarkable. Remarkably normal. Beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well done you! I haven't used our Wii Fit since it told me I was Wii aged 67 (I was 32 at the time). It told my dad he was a year younger than he actually is, and added 3 years to my mum... but added 35 years to me! Even though I could (at the time) run 13 miles straight...

  48. Jack Sh*t, Keeping Fit, I think.

    Normal eh? Can hardly wait!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Way to go! :) I can't wait until my BMI is in the "normal" range too.

You really are an inspiration...but I think you know that.

And I second Fat[free]Me's suggestion. It's cute and accurate.

Oh - and lastly, you *may* like the other blog that I have better than the happyfunpants one. It's smallerfunpants.blogspot.com and that's the one about fitness stuff. :)

  52. Yay for being normal! I'm about 4 lbs away from being there (although I think body-composition wise I'm probably doing ok), and all my doctor tests came out normal, but I certainly don't think I'm very normal any other way. But those are the ones that count.

Fantastic job on winning the last pants standing competition! I've gotten through all my pants but I have that ONE DRESS left...

  53. Way to go! What a huge accomplishment!
